Smile 40 EX Gold Cool is a Japanese OTC eye medicine (Class 2 OTC drug) in the form of eye drops, made by Lion Corporation. It contains 8 active ingredients: vitamin A (retinol palmitate, 33,000 units per 100 mL), vitamin E, vitamin B6, taurine, potassium L-aspartate, neostigmine methylsulfate, chlorpheniramine maleate and tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride. It contains no preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride and comes in a container with a twist cap.

Indications

Indications (as listed in the leaflet):
- Eye fatigue
- Blurred vision (e.g. when there is much eye discharge)
- Conjunctival hyperaemia (bloodshot eyes)
- Itchy eyes
- Blepharitis (inflamed eyelid margins)
- Prevention of eye disease (e.g. after swimming, or when dust or sweat gets into the eyes)
- Eye inflammation caused by ultraviolet or other light (e.g. snow blindness)
- Discomfort while wearing hard contact lenses

Ingredients & form

Active ingredients (per 100 mL):
- Retinol palmitate (vitamin A): 33,000 units
- d-α-Tocopherol acetate (natural vitamin E): 0.05 g
- Pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6): 0.03 g
- Taurine: 0.1 g
- Potassium L-aspartate: 1.0 g
- Neostigmine methylsulfate: 0.005 g
- Chlorpheniramine maleate: 0.03 g
- Tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride: 0.01 g
Additives: boric acid, trometamol, sodium edetate, BHT, polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, polysorbate 80, propylene glycol, l-menthol, dl-camphor, d-borneol, isotonic agent, pH adjuster.
Form: eye drops (ophthalmic solution) in a container for instillation. Preservative-free: contains no preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride.

Dosage

Follow the directions on the package.
Instil 1–3 drops at a time, 3–6 times a day.

Precautions related to directions and dosage:
(1) Excessive use may cause abnormal glare or, conversely, bloodshot eyes.
(2) When a child uses this product, it must be used under the guidance and supervision of a guardian.
(3) Do not let the tip of the container touch the eye, eyelid or eyelashes (this can cause contamination or entry of foreign matter such as eye discharge or dust). Do not use the solution if it has become cloudy.
(4) Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses.
(5) For eye instillation only.
Instil with the tip of the container pointing downwards.

Opening and closing the twist cap (always open and close with the cap facing straight up):
1. To open: hold the container by its sides and twist the cap.
2. To close: press the cap straight down until it clicks.
If you open or close it holding the wide part of the container, the solution may spurt out.

1. The following persons should consult a doctor, pharmacist or registered seller before use:
(1) Persons receiving treatment from a doctor.
(2) Persons who have had allergic symptoms caused by medicines or other substances.
(3) Persons with the following symptom: severe eye pain.
(4) Persons diagnosed with: glaucoma.
2. If the following symptoms appear after use, they may be adverse reactions; stop use immediately and consult a doctor, pharmacist or registered seller, taking this leaflet with you:
- Skin: rash, redness, itching
- Eyes: hyperaemia (redness), itching, swelling, stinging pain
3. In the following cases, stop use and consult a doctor, pharmacist or registered seller, taking this leaflet with you:
(1) If blurred vision does not improve.
(2) If symptoms do not improve after 5–6 days of use.

Storage

Storage and handling precautions:
(1) Store tightly closed in a cool place away from direct sunlight. To maintain quality, do not leave in places with high temperatures (40 °C or above), such as inside a car or near a heater.
(2) Keep out of the reach of children.
(3) Do not transfer to another container (this may cause misuse or change the quality).
(4) Do not share with other people.
(5) Do not use after the expiry date (printed on the bottom of the outer box). Even before the expiry date, use as soon as possible once opened.
(6) If drops are instilled with the container held sideways, or depending on storage conditions, crystals of the ingredients may form on the tip of the container or on the cap. In that case, wipe them off gently with clean gauze before use.
In consideration of the natural environment, no carrying bag is included.
