Description
This medication enhances sugar utilization in the muscles and reduces sugar production in the liver, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. It is commonly prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Ingredients and dosage form
white to yellowish white tablet (major axis: 15.8mm, minor axis: 7.3mm, thickness: 5.7mm)
Dosing schedule/Directions
Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor or by a healthcare professional.
・In general, for adults, start with 1 tablet (500mg of the active ingredient) in 2 to 3 divided doses a day, either just before or after meal. The maintenance dose should be decided by judging the effectiveness of the medicine. Standard maintenance dose is 1.5 to 3 tablets (750 to 1,500mg) in 2 to 3 divided doses a day. For children 10 years or older, start with 1 tablets (500mg of the active ingredient) in 2 to 3 divided doses a day, either just before or after meal. The maintenance dose should be decided by judging the effectiveness of the medicine. Standard maintenance dose is 1 to 3 tablets (500 to 1,500mg) in 2 to 3 divided doses a day. The dosage may be adjusted according to the symptoms. The maximum dose is 4.5 tablets (2,250mg) a day for adults, 4 tablets (2,000mg) a day for children. Strictly follow the instructions.
・If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
・If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
・Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.
Warnings
Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist
・If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
・If you ever had lactic acidosis.
・If you are a patient with renal/liver/cardiovascular dysfunction, pulmonary dysfunction, prone to hypoxemia, dehydration, digestive disorder, type 1 diabetes mellitus, infection, or pituitary gland/adrenal dysfunction.
・If you are in a state of ketosis, in a diabetic coma/precoma, or in perioperative period.
・If you are receiving dialysis.
・If you are injured, malnourished, starved, or debilitated.
・If you drink excessive alcohol.
・If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or possibly pregnant.
・If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)
Precautions while taking this medicine
・Fundamentals of diabetes treatment are diet and exercise therapy. Just taking this medicine is not enough. Try to regulate your daily life as instructed.
・Please note that dehydration or excessive alcohol intake is likely to increase risk of lactic acidosis.
・You may have palpitation, dizziness, tremor in the limbs, etc. caused by hypoglycemia. Therefore pay close attention when you work at heights, drive a car, or operate dangerous machinery.
・Make sure to have your family members understand that you are a diabetic.
Possible adverse reactions to this medicine
・The most commonly reported adverse reactions include diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and vomiting. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
・gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, malaise, muscle pain [lactic acidosis]
・lassitude, hunger, sweating [hypoglycemia]
・general malaise, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and the white of eyes [liver dysfunction, jaundice]
・pain/stiffness/numbness in the muscles of the limbs [rhabdomyolysis]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.
Storing Conditions
Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
