Description
A hypertonic glucose solution for injection. It is used for circulatory collapse, to supply carbohydrate in low blood sugar and in high blood potassium, in heart disease (glucose-insulin-potassium therapy), in other situations where water and energy must be given by vein, and to dissolve and dilute injections.

Ingredients and dosage form
Solution for injection; one 20 mL ampoule holds 4 g of purified glucose (Japanese Pharmacopoeia). No excipients. Clear colourless liquid with a sweet taste; pH 3.5 to 6.5 (measured after dilution to a 5% concentration); osmotic pressure ratio about 4 against physiological saline.

Dosing schedule/Directions
For circulatory collapse, carbohydrate supply in low blood sugar or high blood potassium, heart disease (GIK therapy) and other parenteral water and energy replacement, 20 to 500 mL of a 10 to 50% solution is usually given to an adult into a vein at one time. Where the solution is infused, the rate should not exceed 0.5 g of glucose per kg of body weight per hour. An appropriate amount is used to dissolve or dilute injections. The dose is adjusted according to age and symptoms.

Warnings
Stopping the infusion abruptly after glucose has been given at a fast rate can cause low blood sugar.

Contraindications
Patients with hypotonic dehydration, in whom the osmotic pressure of the serum is low because of a lack of sodium: giving this medicine increases the water content and can make the condition worse.
Used with care in: patients prone to a lack of potassium (glucose moves potassium into the cells and can lower the serum potassium for a time); patients with diabetes (high blood sugar can occur); patients with diabetes insipidus, who need careful control of water and electrolytes, which this medicine can disturb; patients with kidney failure (water accumulates in the body). No clinical study of efficacy and safety has been carried out in children.

Storing Conditions
Store at room temperature and keep out of the reach of children. Discard any unused remainder; do not keep it.
